Vitamin D Awareness Week with BetterYou

Vitamin D is one of the most important vitamins we can supplement due to the fact that it is virtually impossible to eat your way out of deficiency. The vast majority of the vitamin D our bodies require is produced by our skins unprotected exposure to the sun.

With increasingly indoor lifestyles and suncare regime now the norm, we are simply not getting enough Vitamin D.

The new advice from Public Health England is that adults and children over the age of one should take a daily Vitamin D supplement containing 10mcg (400IU) of vitamin D, to protect bone and muscle health particularly during autumn and winter.

People who have a higher risk of vitamin D deficiency are being advised to take a supplement all year round.

At-risk groups include:

  • Older individuals aged 65 or over
  • All pregnant and breastfeeding women
  • Infants and young children under 5
  • People with little or no exposure to the sun
  • People with darker skin

BetterYou™  is supporting Vitamin D Awareness Week to help raise awareness of the UK’s Vitamin D pandemic.

They have launched a website vitamindawarenessweek which is packed with lots of information.  The aim of this year’s campaign is to raise awareness of the potential health issues surrounding low Vitamin D levels.

According to NICE statistics, Vitamin D deficiency affects over 10 million people in the UK alone, with 1 in 6 adults and 1 in 5 children suffering from this easily resolvable pandemic.

BetterYou™ are highlighting the common symptoms of vitamin D deficiency and asking people to fight their Vitamin D-mons, by taking a daily dose of Vitamin D.  They believe year-round supplementation to ensure that levels do not drop to insufficient or deficient levels.

It’s difficult for us to get enouh Vitamin D from food alone, the best source is through our skin’s exposure to sunlight.  Vitamin D is also known as the ‘sunshine vitamin’.

The British summer is so unpredictable and even on days when the sun is out, we don’t go out without sun protection – therefore preventing the UVB rays from penetrating the skin.

Even with regular sun exposure, the amount of Vitamin D your body absorbs depends on many factors including where you live, the time of day, the duration you spend outside and the colour of your skin.  If you’re dark skinned like me, you need more sun exposure to make vitamin D than if you’re fair skinned.

The BetterYou™ range of DLux sprays comes in a range of dosage strengths for people of all ages including infants, juniors, adults and pregnant women using natural ingredients and flavourings.

As a family we use their DLux sprays all year round to ensure optimum Vitamin D levels.

I love how convenient these sprays are, they are easy to use and portable.  They don’t need to be taken with food or water and can be taken at any time of the day.

My kids absolutely love taking their Vitamin D spray, they call it ‘sweetie’ spray.  They love the taste so no fuss involved, just one daily spray in their mouth or on the inside of the cheek.

The DLuxInfant spray has a strawberry flavour while the DLux Junior and DLux 3000 have a refreshing peppermint flavour.  They are really good value for money as you get 100 sprays per pack.

  1. This is such a good post! It’s great that you are raising awareness of this common problem. I found out I had a vitamin D deficiency last year. The minimum level is 50 and mine was 25. I had a high dose course and the doctor told me I needed to take supplements for the rest of my life. I heard that 50% of people in Europe are vitamin D deficient. I’m pale and burn easily so I always need sun protection on and that balancing act of getting some goodness from sun v burning is very difficult for me. I had no idea these sprays existed and am definitely going to look into them.
